What exactly does Special Kids in the UK do?

Special Kids in the UK are a member based charity who offer support through contact with other families with children with special needs. This contact is available through an online forum and also through face to face get togethers. In addition our members receive other benefits and information that becomes available to the charity.

What does "Special Needs" cover

Special Needs covers a broad spectrum of needs and disabilities. This could include:

  • Learning, physical and/or behavioural difficulties
  • Visual and/or hearing impairment
  • Speech and Language Difficulties
  • Congenital, Hereditary and/or Degenerative diseases
  • Mild, Moderate or Severe
Many of our member's children have a mix of special needs. However their families all have similar issues to cope with.

Can you give some examples of conditions

Absolutely! The list is never exhaustive but as an example we have children with cerebral palsy, Cerebellar ataxias, Chromosomal conditions such as Downs Syndrome, Global Development Delay, Dyspraxia, Autism, Aspergers Syndrome, Pierre Robin Syndrome, MLD, SLD, Registered Blind, Hypotonia... and much more. It is important to note that alot of these children are undiagnosed.

Do you have to have Internet Access to become a member?

Although a lot of information and contact is accessed through the website and the members forum we also have members who do not have access to the Internet. These members receive information by post and can attend regional get togethers when they are arranged.

As a member, will my online identity be protected and privacy respected?

Absolutely! The protection of our members identities are our topmost priority, we have worked hard to ensure no personal details can be published, additionally we have private areas of our forum that are protected against the probing eyes of search engines. As a rule we also insist members never, ever disclose their personal login details with other members.

Do you have to live in the United Kingdom to become a member?

Our members are primarily from the UK and Republic of Ireland so that we can provide information and share experiences that are relevant to all our members. However we do welcome Ex Patriots and have several members who originate from the UK who now live in the USA and Europe. If you live outside of the UK and have a question you think we may be able to answer, please do not hesitate to contact us. We often post emailed questions on our online forum for our members to share their experiences and be emailed back to you.
