Special Educational Terms and Professions

Advisory Teachers Advisory Teachers are teachers who have received specialist training and work with schools in the area of Visual Impairment, Physical and Sensory Support, Hearing. In some areas of the country they may be called something different. Ask your Local Education Authority or your child's school for more information
Early Years Action Early Years Action is provided when your child is identified as needing extra or different help within school, nursery, playgroup or preschool. It can be in the form of alternative teaching methods, extra help, working within a small group or specialised equipment
Early Years Action Plus Early Years Action Plus is the next level up from Early Years Action and is provided when your child is identified as needing extra or different help within school, nursery, playgroup or preschool. At this level, external specialists are usually called in to help identify ways to teach and help your child.
Educational Psychologist An Educational Psychologist is a teacher who has had additional training in psychology. They can assess your child's development and progress at school and provide support and advice. An Educational Psychologist will also often have a part in the Statementing Process
IEP - Individual Education Plan A child's targets within a school setting are set within an IEP and dates for progress reviews are set.
Learning Difficulties Learning difficulties (or Learning disabilities) is a term used to describe a child who finds learning more difficult than most other children of their age and can also represent a problem with understanding, communication, behaviour, concentration or associated with a disability.
Local Education Authority (LEA) Local Education Authorities are part of local councils and are responsible for education and youth services. Usually each LEA has a specific area for Special Educational Needs. If the LEA is considering or have issued a statement of special needs for your child you will be given a Named Officer
Music Therapist Music Therapists help children to learn and express themselves through music
Ofsted Ofsted - The Office for Standards in Education - is a government department that aims to help improve the quality and standards of education and childcare. They provide for the regular inspection of all schools in England which are wholly or mainly state funded and all Local Education Authorities. It is a good idea to view a schools last Ofsted report when you are considering sending your child to that school. Their web address is www.oftsed.gov.uk
School Action School Action may be further assessment, additional or different teaching materials, different teaching methods and sometimes additional adult support. IEPs are used record the differential provision required.
School Action Plus School Action Plus is used where School Action has not helped the child to make sufficient progress. This level will usually involve outside services and advice, for example from the LEA's support services, health or social work.
SENCO SENCO - Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator- is usually a teacher within a school or nursery/preschool who ensures children with special educational needs receive the appropriate support
Special Educational Needs (SEN) Special Educational Needs is a term used for children who require different or extra help within pre-school or school and have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most children of their age.
Statement of Special Educational Needs If a child has extra needs that cannot be addressed by the Early Years Action or Action Plus levels, a school may request a statutory assessment of the child's needs. If this assessment is progressed, your child will have a Statement of Special Educational needs outlining their areas of difficulty and what provision within school will be provided to address these difficulties. All key professionals involved in education and therapies should contribute to the assessment process including the parents
Teaching Assistants Also called Learning Support Assistants (LSA). They work in schools alongside the teachers and support individual children or small groups in order to help them to learn and participate effectively
