Annual Family Day 2008

Once again we gathered in South Derbyshire one Saturday in August. This time we had over 230 people present at our Family Day with 49 families camping. Luckily the weather held off and a fabulous day was had by all.

The day started with our Annual General Meeting where our Chairperson, Robyn, gave an update on the previous year, details of the day's activities and the Trustees were re-elected. After this, the children (and adults) had numerous activities they could participate in throughout the day.

We were delighted to have Paul from Drum Therapy Workshop in attendance and many of the children both with special needs and their siblings enjoyed banging a drum or playing an instrument. The sound was wonderful! We also had a visiting goat!

In the Marquee, we had face painting, hair braiding, temporary tattoos and nail polish which many of the children enjoyed. In addition, there were arts and crafts and many toys and dressing up clothes for the children to use.

Due to their success last year we had a bouncy castle and the campsites quad bikes were used allowing children of certain ages to drive safely around a onsite track. Malcolm from Wisewheels also brought along his ever popular special needs trikes – with the adults as well!

In the afternoon, one of our parent members Caroline organised a Native American Treasure trail and the children made head-dresses, decorate a totem pole and followed clues to the Tippee where they chose a prize for their efforts.

Lastly we asked the children present – over 100 - to let a balloon go in memory of those children who have passed away in the past year and before. This was an emotional and poignant moment which those who were there will remember forever.

Our annual event is about getting together. People come from all over the country and many stay for a few nights. This year new friendships were made and old friends were welcomed back. The children, particularly the siblings, benefit from spending time with each other and we all love being part of this large extended family. I know many are looking forward to next year already.
